Discussion Forum for Health Informatics Professionals and Students

Hi everyone,

Some discussions have already said something about this theme, but my doubt relies mainly on choosing a MSc in the UK.

Does anyone has some information about it?

Thanks,

Alex.

Hi there. I am currently writing a thesis in my final year at Swansea University doing the MSc in HI. I can recommend it as being a good course, however, the part time support is sometimes problematic. I cannot comment on the full time support though. However, the core components are there and it has served me well over the past 3 or so years I have been on the course.

Hope this helps,
John

You may also consider a MSc in Medical Informatics in Portugal, namely at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Porto (http://mim.med.up.pt).

Best regards.

Thank you all for the posted comments.

My questions concern the following aspects of a MsC in HI:

- possibility to accomplish a MsC by living outside the UK (web based learning/days for attendance)
- primary care orientation of the learning curriculum/program components
- teachers/tutors at the MsC in HI (relevant personalities involved as teachers)

Best regards.

PS: Hello, Ricardo Correia; thank you for the site of the portuguese MsC in Medical Informatics (also very, very interesting) Um abraço,

Alex.

You might like to take a look at the Spring 2005 Issue of UK Health Informatics Today (http://www.bmis.org/ebmit/2005_46_spring.pdf) which carried a review of MSc Health Informatics Courses in the UK. The Autumn 2006 issue (http://www.bmis.org/ebmit/2006_51_autumn.pdf) also had a special on Education & Training in which some of these are updated.

The UCL MSc in Health Informatics that I teach on, http://www.chime.ucl.ac.uk/study/health-informatics/ , is done through blended learning, so typically 3 face-to-face days every other month, and the rest done online.

Alex, look at www.uclan.ac.uk/healthinformatics where we run e-learning courses from Foundation degree to Masters in HI, all with limited need to attend face-to-face sessions; all that can be done in parallel to a day job in the health domain. Get back to me if you want more info. Jean R

Hi is it possible to get it done entirely online? I am working with health researchers in the data management area and my ideal course would be entirely online so that I can keep working at the same time.

Why Doctors Hate Electronic Medical Records (EMR)

Article by Dr Bill Cast from No More Clipboards, a personal health records company on why doctors hate EMRs: “Today most EHRs and EMRs are invasive both to workflow and finances. While high cost is a significant barrier to physician adoption, workflow disruption remains the killer deterrent. Most proprietary softwares offer a limited palate of practice [...]
